Kids BJJ: Preparing your child for their 1st tournament

Competition can be daunting for anyone, and then add to this that it’s you’re very first competition, and you’re just a kid.  Every child reacts differently to competition, and it’s really important not to put too much pressure on them, especially for their first competition ever.  The tournament should be a positive experience, and a chance to learn and improve.  It’s not just about the gold medal, it’s about the experience.

Here at Atos HQ we have a talented group of kids instructors all working hard to give your kids the absolute best instruction while making the classes fun and engaging.  After your child has been training for a little while they can let you know when they think your kid is ready to compete.  The time line for jumping into the competition scene really depends on the individual child.  Some kids are ready really quickly, and others need a little more time.  It’s important to wait till they are ready and feel confident, so the tournament can be a positive experience.  Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when your child is preparing for their first competition.

Consistency:

It’s important to stay consistent leading up to the competition.  Have your child get as much practice, and attend as many classes as possible in the weeks leading up to the tournament.  This will insure that your child feels confident in their abilities, so they can go out there and do their best.

Pick the right tournament:

Seek the advice of your child’s instructor as to what tournament would be best for them to do as their first.  Try to pick something local with lots of kids in their division, so they can gain as much experience as possible by getting lots of matches.  Winning is always nice, but the goal is experience, improving, and learning how to cope with the nerves.

It’s not about you, it’s about them:

Keep the tournament fun and don’t put pressure on them to win.  Let them go out there and just fight hard.  The best thing you can do as the parent is to be supportive, and leave the coaching to their instructor.

Keep fun first:

The best way to keep kids engaged in an activity is to make it fun.  Win or loose the tournament should be a positive and fun experience.  Try to leave the day on a high note, and make sure they are having a good time throughout the tournament.

Here at Atos HQ we have a fantastic group of kids instructors who not only teach your kids world class techniques, but also keep class fun and exciting at the same time.  If you are interested in learning more about our program please give us a call at 858-292-5040 or email us at staff@atosjiujitsuhq.com and get started on your FREE one week trial today.
