Balance: When they are on top trying to pass their opponent they will have to practice a lot of balance and coordination. They will also learn how balance works, and how they can use their bodies when they are on bottom to knock the person on top off balance, and come on top into a better position.
Reflexes: A lot of the moves in BJJ only work if you use your opponents reaction in your favor, and time your attack off of what they do. By learning this, and practicing moves over and over their reflexes are sharpened and things become automatic, which is especially helpful in a self defense situation.
Flexibility: BJJ takes a lot of flexibility and this is something they can develop with practice especially if they start young. If they keep with BJJ this will continue into adult hood keeping their bodies mobile, agile, and healthy.
Ultimate Anti-bullying tool: It will make them calmer and more rational when dealing with a possible bully situation. They will be more confident and know how to disarm the bully without hurting the bully (or themselves) and deescalate the situation.
Discipline: BJJ is not easy but it will teach them that hard work is important, and it’s rewarding and worth it in the end. Even when things are tough it is important for their character to keep going and stick with it.
Confidence: As they learn more BJJ and accomplish more in their training they will become more confident and outgoing. Sometimes kids have a hard time breaking out of their shell but BJJ can really help them have the confidence to do this and make new friends.
Healthy Lifestyle: BJJ is not only a sport it is a lifestyle. The friends they make become like family, and no matter where you travel you can pretty much count on a BJJ school being close by, which keeps everyone connected. No matter what anyone’s background is BJJ is the common ground that brings everyone together.
Form Friendships: BJJ is a wonderful sport and it builds friendships making one big happy family. If they didn’t have their friends to train with there would be no training, so everyone understands that each person plays an important roll as part of the team.
Critical Thinking: BJJ is just as much a mental sport as a physical sport. You are constantly thinking about what move you want to hit and what your opponent is about to do so that you can be one step ahead of them. It is like a game of chess and if you are not frosty you will fall behind and loose the game. They will learn how to use critical thinking to solve problems in their game, which will help their minds develop as well.
