Can I train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu after my 40’s?

The art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu has been spreaded out all over the world , we have people from everywhere  interested in training BJJ. But the question is: “Am I too old to start training BJJ?”

The answer is simple: “NO!”

We have students over 40 years old on the mat training with us, “You are NOT  too old to start training Jiu-jitsu, but you will  get way older when you do NOT train jiu-jitsu”. A quick look at our BJJ classes pictures you will see a number of BJJ students who are over 40 years of age. We also offer classes for 30+ years old students only. One of our students Louis Choi maintains a high level of fitness through Jiu-jitsu after the age of 50.

TV show host and author Anthony Bourdain started training at 58 years of age earning his blue belt recently.

Many of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu academies were strongly oriented to competition and simply not accessible for the average person who wanted to learn our art. We all respect and get inspired by the high level competitors. Competition training is very demanding and may not be compatible with everyone’s goal and capabilities.

We understand that different students have different goals and needs. We have classes and programs for all levels and types of students. As our motto says: “Together we are Stronger”, understanding that everyone needs each other. Having someone over 40 years of age training with us is so inspiring.

As Atos HQ head coach, I guarantee you that Brazilian jiu-jitsu is the best art a human being could ever learn. Everyone should learn Brazilian jiu-jitsu, it’s fantastic! Regardless your size, gender, experience level, cultural background, or age, you will have a lot of fun, while making friends and also getting fit.

Our curriculum will help you to learn BJJ step by step. We have classes for beginners, women only, kids, adults, teens and groups are separated during classes by size and level. We focus beyond competition helping our students to learn lessons, that will help them to achieve their goals not only on but also off the mat.

Our schedule has nine to twelve classes daily of pure BJJ (Gi and NO Gi). Out of twelve classes per day, only ONE is focused on competition.
