Helpful Things to Know Before Your 1st BJJ Class

The typical class structure for all of our classes here at Atos HQ is warm up, technique, and then sparing.  If you are brand new to BJJ you will be placed in our Basics Class until you become at least a 3 stripe white belt.  The Basics Class is designed to teach you all the core foundational techniques of BJJ, so you will be able to make a smooth transition into our Fundamentals Class.  If you don’t get the basics down the more advanced techniques will be difficult to learn and understand.

Warm Ups:

The warm-ups usually involve a little bit of running around the mat, and some basic Jiu-Jitsu movements that everyone should know.  It’s important to never skip the warm-up especially when you are new because there are important things to learn and it will help you avoid injury.  If you feel awkward or don’t know how to do the movements don’t worry about it.  Everyone feels that way when they first start and the instructor will be there to help you.  Before you know it all the warm-ups will be second nature and easy.

Technique:

In the Basics Class, the technique will be very simple and there won’t be many steps.  Everyone will sit in a semi-circle to watch the instructor teach the move of the day and after he’s done everyone pairs up and practices the technique.  The instructor will be circling around watching everyone and answering any questions you may have about the technique, so don’t worry if you feel lost.  The instructor will be there to help you and if you are paired up with someone more advanced they can help you as well.

Sparring:

The first time you train it’s completely up to you if you want to go live and spare or not.  Many people spare their first time training and many just watch.  If you only know the move you just learned that’s okay.  Try not to stress out about everything you don’t know and just work on the moves you do know.  The instructor will explain the rules of sparing and the goals you should have in mind while you are rolling live with your partner.

Jiu-Jitsu is a personal journey and everyone goes through the process differently.  It’s important to remember to enjoy it and always be open to learning new things even if you don’t think it will be something you add to your game.  Everyone starts at white belt and here at Atos HQ we welcome new members, and we’re always excited to see someone experience the joy of Jiu-Jitsu for the first time.
