After years of coaching and competing, I’ve noticed something all top Jiu-Jitsu athletes have in common:
They don’t just show up physically prepared.
They don’t just train hard or “want it more.”
They come in with a system.
A plan for the match. A roadmap that helps them guide the chaos of a fight – from the first grip to the final second.
NOBODY does this better than Kade and Tye Ruotolo.
Despite having some of the wildest, most unpredictable fights in recent grappling history (people are still talking about Kade’s war with Andrew Tackett at last year’s CJI 👀)…
They’ve built their Jiu-Jitsu around a series of reliable principles, positions, and transitions.
And just a few weeks ago, they taught this system – from start to finish – during two workshops at our academy in Beaumont, CA.
We filmed everything… Added some bonus Q&A sessions… And turned it into a brand new course on Atos BJJ On Demand:
Controlled Chaos: The Ruotolo Bros System
Safe Zones: How to Reset Without Losing Control
One of the most powerful ideas inside the course is what the Ruotolos call Safe Zones.
These aren’t stall or a rest positions.
These are places where you can take a strategic rest to breathe, recover, and reassess… without giving up position.
When Kade and Tye are in their safe zones:
- They’re almost impossible to submit or take down
- Their opponents burn energy trying to force something
- And they conserve energy while planning their next move
These positions are a lifeline in hard rounds and even harder tournaments – a masterclass in composure and control.
The Sisterhood of Chokes
Another standout section is what Kade and Tye call the Sisterhood of Chokes – a fluid chain of front headlock attacks that lets them bypass the guard entirely.
Instead of chasing legs, they attack the head.
They move from D’Arce → Guillotine → Anaconda → back again – until the opponent falls into what Kade calls the “Game Over” Headlock.
Each failed attempt leads to a tighter submission.
And because they’re always attacking, they never give their opponent a chance to reset or recover.
“If your transition is better than your opponent’s defense, you’re always going to be one step ahead.” – Kade Ruotolo
BONUS: 40 Minutes of Q&A with Kade & Tye
After the seminars, the brothers stuck around to answer questions from the kids and adults – 40 minutes of real, honest insight into what drives their game.
A few highlights:
“Make sure my heart’s still beating…”
Tye opens up about cutting 30 pounds before ADCC 2019 – how it impacted his mindset, and what it took to show up and still perform at the highest level.
“It’s all mental.”
They talk about believing they were unbeatable – even after losing to “giant” 12-year-olds as kids 😅
“Takedown, pass, submit.”
Why they’ve built their style around street-effective Jiu-Jitsu – not just the competition meta.
“Oh? We’re not doing Jiu-Jitsu here…”
What really went down in their matches with Levi Jones… and how they adapted on the fly.
PLUS:
- How they trained for the leg lock era (and why they find leg locks “boring”)
- The role their parents played in their journey
- The rematches they’re looking forward to
- How to build competition confidence that actually lasts
